Cesarò is the second-highest comune in Sicily, and its territory holds the finest stretch of the Nebrodi: Monte Soro, the highest peak of the range, and the lakes Biviere and Maulazzo. In winter it really snows; in summer, with the woods, it is pleasant.
It is also one of the most isolated towns in the province of Messina: a hundred and nineteen kilometres from Messina, a hundred and seventy-five from Palermo. For centuries it belonged to the Colonna Romano, who came to Sicily with Frederick II of Swabia — fourteen feudal successions in a row — and of their castle ruins remain above the houses. In 1768 a grain bank was opened, to lend wheat to poor farmers. There are 2,572 residents.

Cesarò celebrates Saint Calogerus on 21 August; the hermit, who died in 561 on Monte Kronio, is patron or co-patron of dozens of Sicilian towns and is honoured here by a church dedicated to him.
