During the 11th-century campaigns against Arab rule in Sicily, the Byzantine general George Maniakes secured victories that ultimately gave this municipality its name. The town honors the former Catepan of Italy whose military presence reshaped the area's medieval history.

Maniace celebrates Saint Sebastian on 20 January; the town takes its name from the Byzantine commander George Maniakes, who built an abbey there in thanksgiving for a victory over the Muslims, which centuries later became Castello Nelson.
