Green pistachio defines the global reputation of this Sicilian town on the western slopes of Mount Etna. The pistacchio verde di Bronte thrives on rugged volcanic soil, elevating the local economy and finding its way into premium pastries and savory dishes worldwide. Beyond its agricultural fame — and a curious title: the duchy granted in 1799 to Admiral Nelson, who signed "Duke of Bronte" ever after — the town of roughly 19,200 bridges two major reserves. Because its territory overlaps both the Etna and Nebrodi regional parks, it provides a highly practical base camp for hikers looking to transition from stark lava fields to dense mountain forests.
The Brontë sisters owe their surname to this Sicilian town. In 1799 Ferdinand of Bourbon rewarded Admiral Horatio Nelson with the title of Duke of Bronte and the lands of the Maniace abbey; the estate stayed in his family until 1981, when the town council bought Nelson Castle complete with furniture and memorabilia. Nelson himself never set foot in his duchy — yet over in Ireland, around those very years, the Reverend Patrick Brunty began signing himself Brontë, most likely in tribute to the admiral he admired, and his daughters Charlotte, Emily and Anne carried the name into literary history.
Locals call the pistachio frastuca, a word of Arabic origin, and the crop has earned the nickname "green gold". The trees grow on the sciare, old lava flows on Etna's slopes, and bear fruit every other year: harvesting happens only in odd-numbered years, by hand, between late August and September. Most of Italy's pistachios come from the Bronte DOP area.
In August 1860, during Garibaldi's expedition, a peasant revolt in Bronte ended in blood: the repression ordered by Nino Bixio led to five executions, among them that of the lawyer Nicolò Lombardo. The episode inspired Giovanni Verga's short story Libertà and a 1972 film by Florestano Vancini.
