Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel

On 29 September Motta Camastra celebrates Saint Michael the Archangel; the municipal territory includes the famous Alcantara Gorges.
The Alcantara gorges are here: the river has cut into the lava and drawn out black walls in columns, at times only a few steps apart. It is one of the most visited places in southern Italy, and it lies in the territory of a town of eight hundred people.
In the hamlet of San Cataldo there is another volcanic cavity, the Grotta dei Cento Cavalli. In the town, the church of the Annunziata keeps a pointed arch, an eighteenth-century canvas of the Madonna del Carmine and two wooden statues. In October comes the walnut festival, which has no equal in Sicily; and around here Francis Ford Coppola shot some scenes of The Godfather. There are 882 residents.
