Established in 1566 on a solid lava stream, Linguaglossa derives its name from a "big tongue of lava" rather than its redundant Latin (lingua) and Greek (glôssa) roots. This town of 5,416 residents occupies Mount Etna's northern slopes, hosting a ski resort where athletes can look out over the Ionian Sea.
Beyond winter sports, the commune has grown into a major hub for Sicilian gastronomy. The volcanic soil yields exceptional Etna wines, matched by Michelin-starred restaurants that elevate regional recipes. For those traveling up the crater, it provides a highly refined culinary stop grounded in an extreme geological landscape.

📅 Every year, on 1 September
Linguaglossa celebrates Saint Giles the Abbot on 1 September, with folk and cultural events; on 16 August instead the feast of Saint Roch is held, enlivened by traditional games such as the «sack race» and the «scassata dî catusi».
Saffron rice, ragù with peas and caciocavallo inside a golden cone-shaped crust: in Catania it is masculine and pointed, and the quarrel with Palermo over the name is serious.
