Altavilla Milicia

Province: Palermo · Region: Sicily · Population: 7,429 · Postal code: 90010

Rising 73 meters above the Tyrrhenian Sea, Altavilla Milicia owes its title to the 11th-century Norman conquest of Sicily. The town's name is the direct Italian translation of Hauteville, the ruling dynasty that took the island before eventually passing this local duchy to the Adragna family.

Located 20 kilometers southeast of Palermo, this hilltop settlement is home to just over 7,400 residents. The architectural and cultural focal point for the community—known in the regional dialect as 'a Mìlicia—is the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Milicia, which anchors the area between neighboring Casteldaccia and Trabia.
