The cathedral of Carini is the town's mother church, dedicated to Maria Assunta. It stands in piazza del Duomo, which is also faced by the oratory of the Compagnia del Santissimo Sacramento and the church of San Vito.
What to see
The façade is late eighteenth-century, with twin bell towers, of which however only the left one was finished; along one side runs a loggia. The interior has a nave and two aisles, divided by a double colonnade.
The decoration is eighteenth-century, with stuccoes and Neoclassical frescoes by Giuseppe Testa, of 1795. In the fourth chapel on the left is an Adoration of the Shepherds by the Florentine Alessandro Allori, painted in 1578.
Visiting
Opening and Mass times should be checked with the parish or on Carini's tourism portal.
Our editors' tip
Go into the oratory of the Santissimo Sacramento too, next to the church: it is covered with stuccoes attributable to the school of Giacomo Serpotta, with on the altar a large Last Supper attributed to Pietro D'Asaro, known as the Monocolo di Racalmuto, and in the vault the fresco of the Triumph of Faith. At the entrance is a late sixteenth-century Madonna of Montserrat, by an unknown painter.
