Sagra della Spiga

📍 Gangi · Palermo · Sicily

Gangi gives the first days of August to its wheat festival, now past sixty editions. The high point is the Corteo di Demetra on the second Sunday, closed by a comedy in local dialect.

Wheat carried Gangi's economy for centuries, and every August the town replays that story. The Sagra della Spiga opens with “A Vanniata”, a crier's round through the streets, then fills more than a week with rural re-enactments, workshops and a food trail called “Memorie e Tradizioni” run together with Slow Food. The 2026 edition, the sixty-first, took place from 1 to 9 August.

Everything builds towards the second Sunday of the month, when the Corteo di Demetra winds through the old town: costumed farmers, sheaves of grain, the wooden sledge known as “stravula” once used to haul the harvest, and the goddess Demeter at the head of the parade. The closing act is “'U Pisatu”, a comedy about threshing performed entirely in Gangi's dialect.
