The patron saint of San Mauro Castelverde is Saint Maurus, celebrated on the first Tuesday of July with the patronal feast locally known as «a Fera», alongside the heartfelt rites of Holy Week and the Ascension of Mary, «l'Acchianata a Maronna».
The town, listed among the castles of the County of Geraci in the diocese of Messina, already existed in Norman times under the name «Santo Mauro»: according to tradition, the settlement took its name after Benedictine monks from a convent that stood on the site donated a relic of the saint. The epithet «Castelverde» was added only on 27 May 1863, when, after Italian unification, the Prefecture of Palermo requested it to distinguish the town from the other twenty-two Italian municipalities sharing the same name. In the historic centre, a plaque reading «fera franca e luoghi franchi» is still preserved along Corso Umberto I.
