A 14th-century castle is the literal foundation of this Sicilian town, providing both its name and the physical core around which its streets originally developed. The modern settlement grew directly outward from this medieval stronghold.
Located in the Metropolitan City of Palermo, Castelbuono has a population of just over 9,100 residents. The local community, who refer to the municipality as Castiḍḍubbuonu in dialect, remains anchored to the historic structure that sparked its 1300s expansion.
Since 2007, part of Castelbuono's door-to-door recycling rounds have been handled by donkeys. It was the first town in Italy to swap garbage vans for pack animals in the narrow lanes of the old center, an idea of then-mayor Mario Cicero that landed the town in newspapers around the world.
Castelbuono and neighboring Pollina are the last places in Europe where manna is still harvested. In summer, growers score the bark of ash trees and the sap dries into white stalactites known locally as cannoli. A Slow Food presidium protects the craft today, and the sweet resin ends up in pastries, cosmetics and the panettone made by Fiasconaro, a company founded right here.
Every July 26 the town turns out for the Giro podistico internazionale, a road race first run on July 27, 1912 and considered the oldest of its kind in Europe. World Athletics recognized it with a Heritage Plaque in 2020, and the 2026 race marked edition number one hundred.
