The patroness of Trappeto is Mary Most Holy Annunciate, celebrated on 25 March, with the parish named after her. The town's first permanent houses date from the early 19th century, built precisely around the old church of the Annunziata, the original nucleus from which today's town developed.
Trappeto is known for the social and cultural work carried out by the writer Danilo Dolci, who settled there from 1952 until his death, which occurred on the morning of 30 December 1997: in his writings, such as «Chissà se i pesci piangono», Dolci recounted the town's life, nicknamed «Borgo di Dio» by the two fishermen who told its story in a famous 1954 booklet.
