Initially established as a Sicanian settlement before evolving into the prominent Greek colony of Leontinoi, this Baroque town holds significant archaeological remains from its classical zenith. Throughout the Byzantine and Swabian eras, the municipality maintained its status as a leading cultural and episcopal center in southeastern Sicily.
Positioned on the Catania Plain near the slopes of the Iblean Mountains, the town is home to roughly 24,400 residents.
