Pantelleria

Province: Trapani · Region: Sicily · Population: 7,493 · Postal code: 91017

Known to the ancients as Cossyra, the island municipality of Pantelleria sits so close to Africa that the Tunisian coast is often visible to the naked eye. This 80-square-kilometer landmass in the Strait of Sicily is the region's westernmost outpost, supporting a population of 7,493.

The terrain rises sharply to the 836-meter summit of Montagna Grande. Nearly four times larger than Lampedusa, the island remains well-connected to the Trapani province via regular ferries, while its local airport provides direct commercial flights to the Italian mainland.
