San Michele all'Adige

Province: Trento · Region: Trentino-South Tyrol · Population: 3,521 · Postal code: 38010

The community was born at the foot of the monastery of the Augustinian canons regular, founded in 1144 by the counts of Appiano with the help of Altemanno, bishop of Trento, in the same years as the houses of Novacella near Bressanone and Santa Maria in Au near Bolzano. That building is still in use, and by three different things at once: the parish church of San Michele Arcangelo, the agrarian institute founded in 1874 — today the Edmund Mach Foundation, which carries out agricultural research and training — and the museum of the customs of the Trentino people.

The outline of the comune has been undone and redone twice. In 1928 the territories of the suppressed comuni of Faedo and Grumo were joined to San Michele; in 1952 Faedo was made a comune of its own again; and on the first of January 2020 Faedo was joined to San Michele once more, this time by incorporation: ninety-two years to come back to the same shape. The old seal of the comune showed the archangel Michael with the scales and the sword, treading on the devil. Above the village stands the castle of Monreale, and the fields around are among the chief ones for Teroldego.
