Feast of Saint Agatha
📅 Every year, on 5 February
On 5 February Sfruz, a municipality of 323 inhabitants in Trentino, celebrates its patroness Saint Agatha; the village is known for the Sfruz potato and for its tile stoves.
For centuries tiled stoves were built here, and the recipe was a secret handed down from father to son. The first signature of a master stove-maker from Sfruz appears on a document of 1532; between 1792 and 1854, that is in sixty-two years, more than a thousand stoves left the Cavosi kiln alone, all made to order. They sold them in Austria and northern Europe, and some even ended up in the Kremlin. At the beginning of the twentieth century the village kilns went out, but stoves of that kind are still made across half of Europe.
The village stands at a little over a thousand metres, at the foot of Monte Roen, and is among the highest in the Val di Non. Its name is thought to come from the Latin segetes et fruges, corn and victuals: perhaps a Roman supply store, since a little further on, at Vervò, the Romans kept a garrison; and while digging for the primary school, in the early twentieth century, Roman graves covered with roof tiles came to light. The coat of arms, of 1984, puts together the two things they know how to make here: a potato flower and a tiled stove.
