Bagno a Ripoli

Province: Florence · Region: Tuscany · Population: 25,403 · Postal code: 50012

On the road to Arezzo, the Bigallo hospice has welcomed wayfarers since the thirteenth century: the restored medieval hostel, still active, is the symbol of Bagno a Ripoli, the first hill outside Florence where Florentines have always kept farms and villas. At the oratory of Santa Caterina all'Antella, Spinello Aretino's fourteenth-century frescoes are a small treasure worth booking.

The name comes from Roman baths on the consular road. Today the municipality is the cultured countryside at the capital's gates: olives, parish churches and trattorias where the bistecca is not a tourist attraction but a daily fact. Florence is ten minutes away; quiet is at home.
