The patron saints of Capannori are Saints Quiricus and Julitta, celebrated on 16 June in the church dedicated to them. The earliest historical records of the village date from the year 745, when a monk who had settled in the territory decided to build a chapel in honour of Saint Quiricus: numerous dwellings were soon built around it, giving rise to an agricultural centre of considerable importance for the economy of nearby Lucca.
According to tradition, as recorded in the descriptions of the municipal coat of arms, the first agricultural settlements that arose on the Lucchese plain developed precisely around a hospice dedicated to the saint, from which the old name Capannole is said to derive; the cornucopia depicted on the coat of arms, filled with the fruits of the earth, alludes to the agricultural vocation that has always characterised the territory. The municipality still today preserves important medieval parish churches, such as that of San Paolo and that of San Gennaro.
