Saint Stephen, patron of Cetona
📅 Every year, on 26 December
Cetona celebrates Saint Stephen on 26 December.
In 1418 the condottiero Braccio da Montone took Cetona and sold it to the Sienese. The people stayed loyal to Siena for almost a century and a half; then, in 1556, worn down by plagues and wars, they surrendered without fighting to the imperial army that had appeared under their walls.
Three years later Cosimo I gave the fief to Chiappino Vitelli, the general who had conquered Siena for him; the Vitelli opened up the town, shut inside its grim walls, and made it a place to live in. In 1652 the fortress, by then a private house, was granted to the Burchielli with one condition: to keep the public clock and the houses around it in order.
