Montefalco

Province: Perugia · Region: Umbria · Population: 5,691 · Postal code: 06036

Tradition says the name was chosen by Frederick II: passing through, he saw so many falcons that he renamed Coccorone as Montefalco. The falcons later disappeared, and on 31 July 2007 the town released a pair of kestrels into the sky; they have bred since.

Since 1568 it has been called the Balcony of Umbria, because from its viewpoints you see the whole valley between Perugia and Spoleto. In the former church of San Francesco, now a museum, Benozzo Gozzoli painted the stories of Saint Francis, and there is also a Nativity by Perugino; in the friars' old cellars the tools of winemaking are kept. Around the 5,691 residents lie the Sagrantino vineyards.
