Campello sul Clitunno

Province: Perugia · Region: Umbria · Population: 2,500 · Postal code: 06042

In 921 a Burgundian baron, Rovero of Champeaux, who had come from Reims in the retinue of the duke of Spoleto, was allowed to build a stronghold on a hill above the springs of the Clitunno. From him came the counts of Campello, and from the counts the town's name.

His descendants sided with the emperor against the Church, so much so that in 1226 Pope Honorius III called them sons of the devil. Lower down, along the Via Flaminia, stands the Tempietto del Clitunno, a World Heritage site since 2011 among the places of Lombard power. The comune is made of thirteen scattered hamlets with its offices at La Bianca; the 2,500 residents make some of the best oil in Umbria.
