Vallo di Nera

Province: Perugia · Region: Umbria · Population: 401 · Postal code: 06040

In 1217 the podestà of Spoleto granted the inhabitants the hill of Flezano and the right to build a castle on it, in exchange for protection: the parchment that says so is still in the state archive of Spoleto. So the Castrum Valli was born, and the village has stayed that way.

In the Franciscan church of Santa Maria is the Procession of the Whites, painted in 1401 by Cola di Pietro da Camerino. At the Portella gate stands the Casa dei Racconti, where what people have handed down by word of mouth is collected. The 401 residents live inside the walls, among narrow lanes and arches; to see the churches outside mass times, you ask the neighbours.
