Trevi

Province: Perugia · Region: Umbria · Population: 8,335 · Postal code: 06039

The Clitunno, today a quiet stream in the plain, was navigable in Roman times and treated as a god: powers were attributed to its waters, and poets sang of it, from the Latin classics to Byron and Carducci. Trebiae, down in the valley, served as a river port.

When the river ceased to be navigable and the valley turned to marsh, the town climbed to the hill where it stands now. In 1214 Spoleto besieged and destroyed it for refusing to submit; free government came only in 1389, and in 1784 Pius VI restored its title of city. The 8,335 residents grow olives on the limestone slope, and in the rock above the town ammonites turn up: one is more than forty centimetres across.
