Monteleone di Spoleto

Province: Perugia · Region: Umbria · Population: 626 · Postal code: 06045

In 1901, at Colle del Capitano, an Etruscan chariot of the sixth century BC came to light, wood covered with bronze plates worked in relief with the story of Achilles. A trafficker took it over the border and it ended up in the Metropolitan Museum in New York, which had bought it: the comune has been asking for its return for years.

In 1535 the people of Monteleone rose against Spoleto, threw out the podestà, elected one of their own and wrote themselves the statute of the Republica Montis Leonis; in 1559 Pius IV removed them from Spoleto altogether. The earthquake of 1703 killed many and diverted the waters of the Corno, and emigration began. With its 626 residents this is the highest comune in Umbria.
