Castiglione del Lago

Province: Perugia · Region: Umbria · Population: 15,422 · Postal code: 06061

During the 16th and 17th centuries, the della Corgna family ruled Castiglione del Lago as a duchy for the Papal States. Their legacy anchors this promontory on the western shore of Lake Trasimeno, alongside the 13th-century Rocca del Leone. Built by the Aretini, this imposing lion fortress ultimately gave the settlement its name.

Now home to 15,422 residents, the town balances medieval architecture with strong agricultural traditions. Local lands yield olive oil, wine, and the Trasimeno bean, a tiny legume protected by Slow Food. In a stark historical contrast, the surrounding area once housed the Leopoldo Eleuteri military airport, operating until the end of World War II.
