Tuoro sul Trasimeno

Province: Perugia · Region: Umbria · Population: 3,850 · Postal code: 06069

In 217 BC Hannibal wiped out the Roman army right here, on the northern shore of Lake Trasimeno. Every mid-August the four quarters challenge each other in a re-enactment of that battle, and the contest ends with the Tiro del Carro, the cart pull.

On the meadow by the beach stands the Campo del Sole: twenty-seven column-sculptures in pietra serena, set there between 1985 and 1989 by contemporary sculptors. From the jetty the ferries leave for Isola Maggiore and Isola Polvese. Above the town, guarding the road that led to Arezzo and Florence, stands the castle of Montegualandro. The 3,850 residents still make lace.
