Magione

Province: Perugia · Region: Umbria · Population: 14,589 · Postal code: 06063

In 1502, in the castle above the lake, a group of lords from Umbria and the Marche agreed to rid themselves of Cesare Borgia. The Magione conspiracy failed: nearly all the plotters were killed by the Valentino's men, at Senigallia and at Città della Pieve.

The castle had begun as a hospice: the Knights of Jerusalem built it at Villa Pian di Carpine, on the pilgrims' road, and called it a magione, a house. The name stayed with the town. It became an abbey, then a fortress; Benedict XIV and Pius VII both stopped here. Today the 14,589 residents live on the hill facing Lake Trasimeno, and on the second Saturday of August the four quarters compete in the Palio del Giogo.

Saint Clement and the castle of the conspiracy

📅 Every year, on 23 November

On 23 November Magione celebrates Saint Clement; the town is dominated by the castle of the Knights of Malta, the scene in 1502 of a conspiracy by Umbrian lords against Cesare Borgia.
