Panicale

Province: Perugia · Region: Umbria · Population: 5,734 · Postal code: 06064

In 1378 Perugia was under siege by the Bretons, and the man who freed it came from here: Boldrino da Panicale. In thanks, Perugia allowed the town to bear its griffin on the arms: it is still there, beside the tower and the ears of panic grass.

In the church of San Sebastiano, Perugino painted in 1505 a Martyrdom that covers a whole wall: the archers around the saint seem to be dancing. On 15 July 1920, in front of Porta Perugina, the carabinieri fired on a march of farm labourers demanding a new sharecropping contract: six died and fourteen were wounded. Today the 5,734 residents live on the hill between Lake Trasimeno and the Nestore valley.
