Lisciano Niccone

Province: Perugia · Region: Umbria · Population: 624 · Postal code: 06060

On the coat of arms there is a chestnut tree, and hanging from it a black chain with a red cauldron and a ladle: a scene of boiling chestnuts, turned into heraldry.

The name probably comes from a certain Lisus, who owned land here in Roman times, joined to that of the Niccone stream, which divides the comune from Tuscany. The eleventh-century castle of the marquesses of Sorbello is down to a few ruins: the town offices were up there before they came down to the valley. In the church of San Niccolò, at Val di Rose, hangs an altarpiece by Eusebio di San Giorgio, of Raphael's school, painted around 1515. The 624 residents live halfway between Umbertide and Cortona.

Saint Benedict of Nursia, patron of a small municipality between two ancient castles

📅 Every year, on 21 March

Lisciano Niccone celebrates Saint Benedict of Nursia on 21 March; its territory holds the remains of the ancient castle once belonging to the Marquises of Sorbello and the Castle of Reschio, part of the chain of walled settlements on the border between the Papal States and the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
