The patron of Panicale is Saint Michael the Archangel, celebrated on 29 September in the collegiate church dedicated to him, dating from between the 10th and 18th centuries.
The collegiate church holds the wooden Christ shown to the faithful every Good Friday during the procession of the Cristo Morto, one of the town's oldest religious events. Central to the procession are tall crosses four to eight metres high, called «tronchi», carried by three confraternities with distinct origins: «La Frusta o disciplinati», with a white cape and red pellegrina, dates from the 14th century; «Il Sacramento», with a turquoise cape and red pellegrina, from the 15th century; «La Morte», with a black cape and pellegrina, from the 16th century.
