Montegabbione

Province: Terni · Region: Umbria · Population: 1,235 · Postal code: 05010

Near the hamlet of Montegiove, in a place called the Scarzuola, the Milanese architect Tomaso Buzzi built himself a theatre-citadel in the second half of the twentieth century: stairs, wings and stone buildings put together like a stage set to be walked through.

The town's name comes from the Latin Mons Capionis, the mount of conquest. In 1345 the castle belonged to the Monaldeschi della Vipera, then within a few years it passed between Ugolino di Montemarte and Guillaume de Beaufort. In the centre stands the tower of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, and you can still climb it. In 1869 the comune absorbed that of Montegiove; the 1,235 residents live between the Chiani and Fersinone streams.
