Piegaro

Province: Perugia · Region: Umbria · Population: 3,799 · Postal code: 06066

In 1292 Venice banished every furnace from the city and moved them to Murano; some Venetian craftsmen, it seems, came down as far as here. Glass has been made in Piegaro ever since, and in the sixteenth century Julius II and Paul III exempted the glassmakers from taxes for four years.

The old glassworks, in the middle of the town, has been the Glass Museum since 2009; the new one, the glassmakers' cooperative, is among the most important in Europe. The name comes from the Latin pleca, fold: the place of many folds, like the hills that close in on the Nestore. The 3,799 residents also have the castle of Cibottola and, at Pietrafitta, the Benedictine abbey of the Seven Brothers.

Saint Sylvester, patron of a glassmaking town

📅 Every year, on 31 December

Piegaro celebrates Saint Sylvester on 31 December; the town is renowned for its glassmaking tradition, possibly introduced by Venetian craftsmen in the late 13th century, when Venice banned furnaces from the city and moved them to Murano.
