Monteleone d'Orvieto

Province: Terni · Region: Umbria · Population: 1,559 · Postal code: 05017

While the cathedral of Orvieto was going up, in the first half of the fourteenth century, the kilns were lit here: bricks, glass and tesserae for the mosaics. Local craftsmen gilded the tesserae, and the first of them was called Consiglio Dardalini.

The castle, writes the historian Cipriano Manente, was founded by Orvieto in 1052 to guard its northern border; the name appears for certain in a deed of Frederick II of 1243. In 1878, near the town, a chamber tomb was found with Etruscan urns inscribed in Latin and Tyrrhenian. The Nestore rises at the spring of the Santissimo Crocifisso. The 1,559 residents look out over the Valdichiana.
