Parrano

Province: Terni · Region: Umbria · Population: 590 · Postal code: 05010

Under the hill of Parrano opens a maze of caves they call the Tane del Diavolo, the devil's dens: inside have been found hut floors, pottery and necklaces of the Bronze Age. From these parts came also a small green steatite figure of a woman, of the Upper Palaeolithic.

The castle at the top of the village had rooms for the pope: you reached them on horseback, and from the bedchamber you passed into the chapel of San Biagio and from there into the church. The name probably comes from the Latin Parra, the hoopoe, and appears in a document of 1118, when the bishop of Orvieto made Bernardo di Bulgarello a count. At the foot of the hill the 590 residents have their thermal baths.
