The patroness of Amelia is Saint Firmina, celebrated on 24 November. She came from a family that could have kept her in comfort, but she chose to leave it and withdraw to pray near the town; for the Christian faith she was martyred under Diocletian.
The feast is a solemn pontifical Mass in the cathedral dedicated to her, with the ceremony of the offering of candles by the mayors of the whole Amelia district — Penna in Teverina, Giove, Alviano, Attigliano, Lugnano in Teverina and Guardea — and a historical procession that harks back to the old statutes of the commune of Amelia of 1346. Saint Firmina is also the patroness of Civitavecchia, which celebrates her on 28 April.
