On the edge of San Bonifacio, in the Villanova hamlet, stands one of the Veneto's great Romanesque abbeys: San Pietro Apostolo, refounded in 1131 by the Benedictines, its crypt a forest of columns. It is the legacy of the Sambonifacio counts, the family that for centuries contested Verona with the Scaligeri and left the town its name.
