On the edge of San Bonifacio, in the Villanova hamlet, stands one of the Veneto's great Romanesque abbeys: San Pietro Apostolo, refounded in 1131 by the Benedictines, its crypt a forest of columns. It is the legacy of the Sambonifacio counts, the family that for centuries contested Verona with the Scaligeri and left the town its name.
The municipality of 20,275 sits exactly halfway between Verona and Vicenza, with Soave and its vineyards two kilometres away — a position that has made it a lively trading centre since the Middle Ages. For anyone touring the east Veronese lands of castles and wineries, it is an almost obligatory crossroads.
