Caldiero

Province: Verona · Region: Veneto · Population: 7,374 · Postal code: 37042

Between 1796 and 1813 four battles of the Napoleonic wars were fought at Caldiero, always between the French and the Austrians: the Austrians won in 1796 and 1809, the French in 1805 and 1813. Two all, on the same patch of plain, in seventeen years. The hill of the Rocca was used by Napoleon as a command position.

Long before, the village was called Calidarium, for its warm waters: the Roman pools of the baths of Juno are still there, fed by two springs that come out at twenty-seven and twenty-five degrees. In the hamlet of Caldierino, in 1777, Gaetano Callido built an organ of five hundred pipes.
