Lake Fimon is what remains of a much larger lake, called Longara, which until the fifteenth century covered nearly all these valleys. Around it rise the Berici hills, and they were born in the sea: in the rock you find sea urchins, corals and mollusc shells, laid down on the floor of a warm sea and later lifted up.

In 1841 the geologist Catullo climbed from Monte Berico to the Margaritoni and described what nobody had yet bothered to record: the basalt that had pushed up through the limestone and thrown it into confusion, and the volcanic bombs piled inside the rock. Arcugnano is a scattered municipality: the town hall is not in the place that gives the commune its name, but at Torri.
