Saint Anthony the Abbot, patron of the spa town
📅 Every year, on 17 January
Recoaro Terme celebrates Saint Anthony the Abbot on 17 January, in the church dedicated to him.
Recoaro is the rainiest place in the whole of the Veneto, more than 2000 millimetres a year, and its fortune is born precisely from that: the Vicenza Prealps are the first mountains you meet coming from the sea, the rock is calcareous, and the water that falls comes back out at the bottom of the basin as mineral springs. Count Lelio Piovene discovered them in 1689, and the first spring took his name. There is more: so many different kinds of rock outcrop in this valley that the Veronese geologist Giovanni Arduino used them to build the division into geological eras that is still in use today.
On those waters the town built a city in miniature. Between 1873 and 1876 the architect Antonio Caregaro Negrin raised the bathing and hydrotherapy establishment of the Fonti Centrali with the declared ambition of standing comparison with the most exclusive spas in Europe, and redesigned the park around it so that the harsh landscape should turn romantic; in the summer of 1879 Victor Emmanuel came. Then the war: the German command of Army Group C was based here, and the Allied bombing of 20 April 1945 razed the spa complex. It was rebuilt, but without the raised central body that had been its crown.
