Amalfi Cathedral

📍 Amalfi, Campania · 87/100

The 62-step staircase climbs from the square to the golden Byzantine-style façade: the cathedral of Saint Andrew is Amalfi's throne, with a bronze door cast in Constantinople in 1057 — among Italy's first — and the apostle's relics, brought from Constantinople in 1208, kept in the Baroque crypt. The Arab-Norman bell tower with yellow-green majolica signs the skyline.

The Cloister of Paradise (1266), with its whitest interlaced arches, is a corner of the Orient suspended above the square.

Our tip: the visitor entrance goes through the cloister: take it calmly in the morning, then return to the staircase at night, when the steps empty and the lit façade belongs to those dining in the square.
