Rocca Calascio

📍 Calascio, Abruzzes · 84/100

At 1,460 metres, the highest fortress of the Apennines has watched the mountains of Abruzzo for a thousand years: tower and crenellated ring on a bare ridge, not a power line in sight — which is why cinema loves it, from "Ladyhawke" to "The Name of the Rose". The 1703 earthquake emptied the village below, today partly reborn with refuges and workshops.

Beside it, the octagonal chapel of Santa Maria della Pietà stands on the meadow like an apparition.

Our tip: twenty minutes on foot from Calascio village: do them at sunset, when the stone turns gold and the Gran Sasso fades slowly. In winter snow it is another planet — but you need chains and judgement.
