La Thuile

Province: Aosta · Region: Aosta Valley · Population: 776 · Postal code: 11016

In 1947, under the Treaty of Paris, 3.22 square kilometres of the comune passed to France, the hotel on the Little St Bernard included. It is the last chapter of a long military story: the pass was the gate between the Tarentaise and the Duchy of Aosta, and French troops occupied the village in 1704 and again in 1794.

In Roman times it was called Ariolica and the via delle Gallie ran through it; the present name appears in 1760. The black of the coat of arms recalls the coal mines that supplied the Aosta steelworks from 1928 to 1966. Today its 776 residents live on skiing, with the international link to La Rosière; above lie the Rutor glacier and a score of high mountain lakes.

Saint Nicholas and the shepherds' festival

📅 Every year, on 9 May

On 9 May La Thuile celebrates Saint Nicholas in its 12th-century parish church; in summer, instead, the Fête des bergers brings together shepherds from both sides of the Piccolo San Bernardo.
