The patroness of Montjovet is the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, celebrated on 8 September in the church that bears her name, at Berriat, the main town.
The municipality has another one, though, dedicated to Germanus of Auxerre, beside the castle in the hamlet of Saint-Germain: the divided field on the municipal coat of arms represents precisely the two parish communities, Notre-Dame and Saint-Germain. In the Middle Ages Montjovet had its own feudal lords, then passed to the Challant, when tolls made the fortune of local lordships, embodied in the castles of Chenal and Saint-Germain: its jurisdiction extended to today's municipalities of Saint-Vincent, Émarèse, Champdepraz and Saint-Germain itself, obligatory stops for merchants and pilgrims along the Via Francigena, and for that reason rich in hospices.
