The patron saint of Castelluccio Inferiore is Saint Nicholas of Myra, celebrated on 6 December. The mother church dedicated to him was severely damaged by an earthquake, which caused the collapse of its central vault along with damage to the town hall and the bell tower: it reopened for worship precisely on 6 December 2012, after fifteen years of restoration.
In the Middle Ages the town belonged to Admiral Ruggero di Lauria, on whose death his fiefs were divided; it then passed under the rule of the Sanseverino family, who held it as feudal lords until the mid-16th century, and then to the barons Cicinelli-Napolitano and Palmieri. In 1570 Castelluccio passed to the Pescara di Diano family, who retained possession until the end of feudalism in 1806.
