On 16 August 1972 an amateur diver noticed a bronze arm emerging from the sand at Riace: the two Greek warriors of the fifth century before Christ recovered that day are now the treasure of the National Archaeological Museum of Magna Graecia, and they alone are worth the journey to Calabria. They are kept by the oldest city in Calabria, founded by the Greeks as Rhegion, facing the Strait along the promenade that tradition — quoting D'Annunzio — calls «the most beautiful kilometre in Italy».
Its modern face is the child of a tragedy: the earthquake of 28 December 1908 levelled almost everything, and the city was rebuilt in Liberty style, straight along the coast. It is the most populous comune in Calabria and the region's only metropolitan city, and in the district of Bocale an obelisk of Carrara marble marks the crossing of the thirty-eighth parallel. On the right days the Fata Morgana appears over the Strait, the mirage that brings Sicily closer. At the foot of the Aspromonte the bergamots grow: their scent is the secret soul of the world's great teas.
