In 1270 the castle was attacked and half destroyed by the militia of Ubertino Landi, lord of Bardi; those who defended it were the Pallastrelli, who in 1363 had to sell it and went off to Portugal. There they were given honours, and a descendant of theirs, Filipa Perestrello — that is, Pallastrelli — married Christopher Columbus.

The castle is of the early thirteenth century, raised perhaps over a Lombard tower: it was the outpost of Guelph Piacenza against Ghibelline Pavia, and it guarded the mouth of the val Tidone — until the end of the eighteenth century there was a river port below the Bosco di Litta that took you to the other bank of the Po. The church of Santa Maria Assunta was wanted in the eighth century by a Lombard prince, Burnengo, who was then buried under its threshold.
