The patron saint of Savignone is Saint Augustine, celebrated on 28 August. According to a tradition attested by some historical sources, in 725 the Lombard king Liutprand stopped in the town while transporting the remains of the saint, which he had had taken from Cagliari to move to the basilica of San Pietro in Ciel d'Oro in Pavia, where they are still kept today; the founding of Savignone is traced back to the same legend.
The parish church of San Pietro, in the main town, was built in the 13th century and mentioned in the 1196 papal bull of Celestine III as a dependency of the abbey of Precipiano; it was later rebuilt by Urbano Fieschi in 1691 and holds a painting by Giovanni Battista Carlone. The castle overlooking the town, depicted on the municipal coat of arms, was erected by the Fieschi family, counts of Lavagna, who acquired the fief of Savignone from the mid-13th century onward: official investiture was granted to Gian Luigi Fieschi the Elder in 1495 by Maximilian I of Habsburg, and to Ettore Fieschi the Elder in 1548 by Charles V.
