The parish church of Montegrosso Pian Latte is dedicated to Saint Blaise, the village patron, celebrated on 3 February. The original building goes back to a period between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries; towards the eighteenth it was rebuilt in baroque forms to a design by Giacomo Filippo Marvaldi, and little of that first church was left standing.
What to see
That little is the best part: on the side of the building a doorway opens under a small portico, and its carved lintel bears the date 1435. It was worked by the stonecutters of Cenova, the masters of stone in these valleys, and it shows Saint Blaise, an angel and the Agnus Dei. Inside, the decoration is frescoed and baroque in taste, belonging to the eighteenth-century rebuilding.
Visiting
The church stands in the old centre, on the terrace at 721 metres to which the village clings, below Monte Monega. It is a few steps from the chestnut museum, and the two visits go together without effort.
Our editors' tip
Do not go straight in: walk round to the side first and look closely at the 1435 lintel. It is the oldest carving in the municipality and it is easy to walk past, because the main doorway is on the other side.
