The patroness of Calizzano is Our Lady of Graces, celebrated on 2 July. The sanctuary of Nostra Signora delle Grazie, possibly built around the 9th century and once the parish church, holds a frescoed Romanesque portico and a bell tower that has kept its original lines unaltered; it stands next to the cemetery and the Parco della Rimembranza.
The fief of Calizzano passed in 1142 to Enrico I Del Carretto and followed his family's fortunes until the 15th century, when Marco Del Carretto, lord of the town, betrayed a relative by striking a peace deal with the Republic of Genoa during the war against the marquisate of Finale: the reaction was severe, with the town sacked and burned and the 13th-century castle destroyed, forcing Marco to flee and plunging the population into poverty.
