Feast of Saint Lawrence
📅 Every year, on 10 August
On 10 August Cogoleto carries its crucifixes in procession for Saint Lawrence, and closes with fireworks over the sea.
The name comes from the stones. The beach was covered with cogoli, pebbles, to the point that no sand could be seen: «perhaps a unique case on the Ligurian shore», wrote Giovanni Battista Spotorno in 1819. Hence Cogoleto, and in Genoese Cogoeo.
It is not the only hypothesis. Some derive the name from Codoledo, which is also the form in which the place appears in the oldest parchment, that of 1023, and link it to the quince, which was much grown here; and some take it from a Greek-Latin formula meaning «at the head of the river», for the mouth of the Arrestra. There are 9,145 residents.
