On August 26, 1959, a presidential decree officially elevated Melegnano—historically known as Marignano—to the honorary status of a city.
Located 16 kilometres southeast of Milan, this Lombard municipality is home to 16,774 residents. It remains connected to the regional capital via its own railway station, while the traditional name, Meregnan, is still recognized in the local dialect.
